William Chaiken was born in Russia in
1921 and raised in Winnipeg, Canada. He studied at the Winnipeg School of Art
and at the Art Students League in New York. In 1960, he became a US citizen.
Chaiken had numerous solo shows in the USA and Germany and participated in
many major exhibitions, including the Carnegie International, Corcoran
Biennial, and six Whitney Annual Shows. His work is in the collection of the
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the San Joaquin Museum in
California and in private collections worldwide.
Beside his own art work, Chaiken has been painting scenery for Broadway shows,
TV, Metropolitan Opera and dance companies in New York and for motion
pictures. On various movie projects he was working on location abroad, and the
impression of these countries, their people and culture is reflected in his
artwork. |
